What is so important about "a piece of paper"?

whyAfter four decades of a 50% divorce rate, social scientists have a great deal of data regarding the effects of marriage, divorce, cohabitation, single parenting and step-parenting. What we have learned is that our communities, our health, our wallets and our future generations have all taken a hit as marital breakup, cohabitation, and unmarried childbirth have become socially acceptable.

Cheryl and CurtThis information is not to suggest that every person should marry or that every couple should remain married. What it does mean, however, is that marriage is clearly more than a private emotional relationship affecting only two people.

It is in the best interest of all of us, as individuals, couples, families, neighborhoods and communities to encourage and support marriage, not just on the wedding day, but in the years before the wedding and for decades beyond.
